BUSISIWE LORRAINE MANYONI

Lorraine and kidsBusisiwe, referred to as Lorraine, is one of the initial Housemothers at Mother of Peace, Illovo. Her family unit was torn apart due to inter-racial conflict between her birth parents. The diverse backgrounds of the two parents left her as a child with the questions about where she belonged. As a result she spent most of her life at Sacred Heart Children’s Home and only returned to extended family when she was older and there was greater acceptance.
She has two children, Amanda who is eighteen, and Penwell, who is eight years old. She is a single mother fortunate to have Penwell with her in the foster care homes, but Amanda grows up with her family who she visits when she is off.
She enjoys cooking and gardening. Her favorite food to make is traditional food. She treats the children in the home like her own and feels grateful to have her child in the village in order for him to learn about the two worlds – the one out there and the one created to nurture children who have had early life difficulties living without parents. She has deep respect for the children and believes that the teachings at Mother of Peace as a prayerful community instils values and teaches children to place God at the center of their lives.  With extra money, she would invest in education.
