OTILIA MUTWA

OtiliaOtilia Mutwa is the oldest housemother and one of the first to join Mother of Peace, Illovo community. She takes care of seven children in the Sacred Heart Home. She grew up in Umbumbulu with her family. She is married and has one child and two grandchildren. Her grandchildren – Angel, 21 years old and Mmeli, 14 years old – are raised by her family. She visits her home on her days off to spend time in her community about 200 km away from Illovo.  What she enjoys most is going to church, gardening, and beading. Her unique beadwork blends traditional and modern styles. She believes her special touch creates a sense of security with the children.
She enjoys baking homemade bread and serving this with beans. Her work at MoP is very important to her because she loves looking after children and praying for the community. She also empowers the ladies/other house mothers through a stokvel which is similar to a savings club that pays one member out monthly. With extra money she would build a home and assist her grandchildren with school fees and other educational needs.
