Three Easy Ways to Support WAM Theatre for Individuals

Three Easy Ways to Support WAM Theatre for Businesses

Inspired by Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, WAM Theatre has a double philanthropic mission: producing theatrical events for everyone, with a focus on women theatre artists and/or stories of women and girls, and donating a portion of proceeds from those theatrical events to organizations that work to benefit the lives of women and girls locally and globally.

In 2010, our inaugural year, WAM Theatre performed for over 600 people and raised over $15,000 in donations and box office sales. We produced two events,  A WAM Welcome and Melancholy Play and collaborated with over 40 theatre artists, 80% of which were female. In keeping with our double philanthropic mission, we also gave a portion, up to 25%, of box office proceeds from each event to two beneficiaries, Women for Women International and the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts.

In 2011, we performed for over 800 people, raised over $30,000 in donations and box office, collaborated with over 100 theatre artists, 80% of which were female and continued to donate 25% of our box office proceeds to our beneficiaries. We produced the ‘Oh Solo Mama Mia Festival’ in Troy, NY and Pittsfield, MA which showcased five solo works written and performed by women which led to a donation to Edna’s Hospital in Somaliland to be used toward the training of a community midwife. We also presented The Attic, the Pearls, and Three Fine Girls, a comedy collectively written by Martha Ross, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Jennifer Brewin, Alisa Palmer and Leah Cherniak on Barrington Stage Company’s Stage 2, with proceeds benefiting the Berkshire United Way Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative. Additionally we produced the first 24hr Capital Region/Berkshires Theatre Project, devised our first original piece of theatre ‘Women & Words’ at the WordxWord Festival and were part of the Berkshires Festival of Women Writers with ‘I’m not a Feminist but…’ benefiting Berkshire Women for Women Worldwide.

Our aim in 2012 is to achieve what we did in 2011, PLUS continue to increase the wage we are able to pay our professional theatre artists and make larger donations to our beneficiaries.

A fact as you consider a donation:

1) Over the last 25 years the number of plays produced that were written by women seems to have vacillated between 12 and 17 percent. (http://www.theresarebeck.com/blog/labels/ART__NY.html)
