“I am so looking forward to the opportunity to devise another original piece with community talent around relevant themes. Theatre is a powerful vehicle and WAM embraces and provides a platform for the unique and courageous voices that emerge out of the Ensemble. It is thrilling to be witness to such empowerment.”

– Amy Brentano, WAM Theatre Teaching Artist

Devised theatre is an empowering collaborative process where an ensemble uses a variety of techniques– writing, improvisation, games, movement, brainstorming, and more– to create original performance material. The criteria for participation is enthusiasm and the creative impulse to voice feelings and ideas through multiple forms of artistic expression.

WAM Theatre has been working with ensembles to devise original performances on activist themes since 2014. In addition to our Teen Ensemble, Elder Ensemble and People of Color Ensemble, WAM Teaching Artists have designed in-house devised theatre workshops for school and community groups, including the Women’s Program at Soldier On! for female veterans, BRIDGE’s Women to Women program for immigrant women, and BRAINworks professional development for public school teachers in the Berkshires.  If you are interested in designing a devised theatre workshop for your school or community group, please contact: talya@wamtheatre.com.

Note: In order to protect our ensemble members and comply with COVID-19 Social Distancing regulations, our 2020 Elder Ensemble and People of Color Ensemble met online.
