Cate Alston is a New York City actress, who centers her work on advocating for BIPOC representation within theatre spaces and creating equitable opportunities for budding artists. This is Cate’s first year working with WAM as an Artistic Assistant. Prior to this year, Cate worked with WAM as an Artistic Apprentice on ROE and The Thanksgiving Play. Cate recently graduated from the University at Albany where she earned a B.A in Theatre and Psychology. During her time at UAlbany, Cate performed as integral characters, such as Titania (A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 2020), Esther Mills (Intimate Apparel – 2019), and Stella Dubois (A Streetcar Named Desire – 2018), to name a few. Additionally, Cate discovered her passion for Costume work at UAlbany, where she worked on several department-curated (Our Country’s Good – 2019, Streetcar – 2018, Godspell – 2018) and independent (Future Thinking, UAlbany Theatre Council – 2019) projects. Cate’s earlier education includes training from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, where she worked with Meisner-descended professors and Talent Unlimited High School, where she studied Musical Theatre. Creatively, Cate is inspired by actresses Cicely Tyson and Viola Davis. In terms of activism, Cate is inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Angela Davis. Cate’s activist roots began at Ualbany, where she co-founded the Student Liaison Board, which was a group of diverse students whose mission was not only to help curate the following year’s productions but also to work with a non-POC faculty to provide greater insight on how to meet the needs of students of color within the department, this is one of her proudest achievements. Cate is excited to be working with the incredible team at WAM and continue her social, racial, and human rights work. Contact: www.CateAlston.com
