Lady Randy Costume & Set Designers Speak!

Brittney Belz, Costume Designer:

“I’m immensely excited to be working on this production! I’ve been a long time admirer of WAM’s work, but haven’t before had the opportunity to be involved in a full production with the company. And there couldn’t be a more perfect production in my mind for my debut show here. I’m a long time lover of everything historical, especially stories of unique and interesting people. And Lady Randy certainly is both! Anne’s approach to the writing is captivating by making the characters vibrant and so very real through their flaws and their triumphs. The moment I was sent the script, I absolutely knew I wanted to be a part of this production. Aside from getting a chance to create beautiful 19th century costumes, I instantly fell in love with the sparkle, joy, sophistication, rawness, passion, and energy that is Lady Randy.”

“I think the script for Lady Randy really does a great job of balancing a truthfulness towards the history and the period, and a connection to a modern audience. And that is exactly the way I am approaching the costumes. Taking inspiration from the colors of the American and British flags (both Red, White and Blue) to combine Jennie’s two countries, I created a muted color palette of dresses that showcase the beauty of 19th century clothing. Her vibrancy and sparkle appears in the glitter, shine, and movement of the fabrics I am working with. For Mark, the trick is getting him to embody so many characters with only minimal variation. But again, working with the period clothing instead of against it, we can use all of the layers inherent to 19th century menswear to give us that variability. By working with the actor to alter how he wears the clothing, and adding a few simple clothing pieces along the way, he can portray the entire cast of characters we meet as we follow Jennie’s story.”

“Whenever I have the opportunity to work on a new play, with the playwright involved, it’s always exciting as a scenic designer. I can immediately bounce ideas off of the originator of the world I’m trying to tap into. I can also see the playwrights reaction when I’ve hit the right vein, or when I find something that they didn’t originally see but that illuminates the moment for them so perfectly. I love watching playwrights get excited about the 3 dimensional world I’m creating for them.”

“Lady Randy is a posthumous dream play. Chosen moments of her life are played out for us. Connections are made, lines are traced, and relationships are exposed and examined. The story moves quickly from memory to memory, so the physical world I create has to be fluid and easily adapted to multiple locations. Because this is a dying dream of Lady Randy’s, I don’t have to be literal with the world, so you will see ropes criss-crossing over head, a Union Jack painted in drained colors with expressionistic brush strokes on the floor, rolling screens, and a giant, long, table running from one side to the other. Translucent veils surround the audience, placing them inside the dreamworld of Lady Randy, while etherial images of the British Empire appear and vanish on their surfaces.”
