Tony Award Nominee, Pulitzer Prize Finalist

A boundary-breaking play that breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans.

Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human play, Heidi resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. Addressing themes such as domestic abuse, reproductive rights and immigration, WAM Theatre and Berkshire Theatre Group join forces to bring this timely and galvanizing play to Berkshire audiences. It became a sensation off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway where it received two Tony Award nominations and was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama among countless other accolades.

What the Constitution Means to Me is presented on the Larry Vaber Stage at The Unicorn Theatre, 8 East Street, Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Run time approx. 100 minutes.

"The whole point of the play is that I don’t control it. It’s a civic act. We decide as a community how to move forward."

  • Kristen van Ginhoven

"As an artist, activist and human, I find myself yearning for more collaboration, accountability and engagement. This play answers that call with humor, intelligence and poignancy. Rave reviews for “What the Constitution Means To Me”

  • “Funny, beguiling, and emotionally vivid… part of Constitution’s genius is that it provokes even as it heartens: By inviting a live audience to confront together, the limitations of the liberties the Constitution protects, it asks us to participate in a democratic act of historical self-reckoning.”

    - Alisa Solomon, Nation
  • “A wildfire! Something every citizen must see. Heidi Schreck’s play has tears on its cheeks and the torch of liberty in its fist.”

    - Helen Shaw, Tine Out New York
  • “What the Constitution Means to Me is redefining what political theater can be: Something that is not polemic or didactic, but personal and urgent.”

    - Diep Tran, American Theatre
  • “Brilliantly digressive, insistently personal. What the Constitution Means to Me is both a winsome love letter to and worried critique of one of the nation’s founding documents.”

    Laura Collins-Hughes, New York Times
