How do you define claiming your place? Can you tell me about a time when you claimed your place in your profession?

As a female scenic designer, even with so many great women blazing trails ahead of me, I still remember walking into the scene shop to present my designs at my first professional show at Julliard. The entire all-male construction crew doubted every decision I made and threw the “b” word around whenever I stood my ground. It was daunting, but I was tenacious and survived!
What fictional, historical, or current public figure do you admire for her ability to stand up for herself?
Rachel Maddow–she is wicked smart and so articulate. No one can push her around!
What advice would you give to women who are just starting to establish themselves in their careers on how to claim their places confidently?
Women must know their jobs front to back, inside and out, and better than their male counterparts. From that level of knowledge and skill, no one can touch you, and from that level of confidence, your place is already claimed.  Don’t let anyone keep you from learning everything you can get your hands on!

Is there a quote–from a song, movie, book, poem, TV show, etc.–that seems relevant to the subject of claiming your place and facing challenges in your working life?
“The whole point of being alive is to evolve into the complete person you were intended to be.”  Oprah Winfrey
“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence.”  Helen Keller
